Legal aid
Parents who are involved in a case regarding the residence of a child and contact with the child have the right to legal aid if they meet certain financial criteria. This includes being represented by a lawyer. The income threshold to qualify for legal aid is the same as in cases where free trial is granted under Chapter 41 of the Administration of Justice Act for the Faroe Islands.
Effective from January 1, 2026, the income threshold for singles is a maximum of DKK 404,000 annually, and the income threshold for married/couples is DKK 513,000. Additionally, the income threshold is increased by DKK 70,000 for each child under 18 years of age, including stepchildren and foster children living with the applicant or for whom the applicant bears the majority of expenses for the maintenance.
The Application for Legal Aid is available upon request.
Contact the Family Law Administration for more information on legal aid and the financial criteria.
